Oka

Cucumis melo

A lovely flavoured muskmelon, similar to a cantaloupe but not quite as sweet. We found them delicious and have heard that they are excellent dried. Developed in 1912 by Father Athanase of the Trappist Monastery near Oka, Quebec, the melon was commonly available in the 1920s and 1930s but disappeared from seed catalogues in the 60s. Oka melon seeds were found on Bizard Island, Montreal several years after the melon was thought to have disappeared. Thick orange flesh and lovely texture. Certainly not as sweet as a watermelon, but reliable and great tasting and matures in short season areas.
