Melothria scabra

This climbing plant has dainty vines and cucumber flavoured fruit with a slightly sour taste. It has a wonderful crunch and watermelon patterning. When grown up a fence or on a pole it will reach over 6' tall. Likes the heat of a polyhouse, but will produce outside from July to October from a spring planting.

Growing Instructions

Start indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting into warm soil. Sow 2cm deep in each pot, using bottom heat. Transplant when plants develop their third true leaf, full sun. Space plants 23cm apart in row and 90cm apart. Ideal well drained, warm soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8. Keep plants well picked for better production. Water the soil only, keeping the leaves as dry as possible as they can be susceptible to powdery mildew.
