Member Spotlight: Lana Braun of Hummingbird Farm

Meet Lana Braun, the farmer behind Hummingbird Farm, based in West Kootenay BC.  She has been a member of the co-op since 2020.

Hummingbird Farm specializes in flowers, and wow do they ever deliver! Currently the BC Eco Seed Co-op carries 27 flower varieties from her farm, as well as ranunculus corms in the fall and early spring.

How long have you been farming, and what brought you to it?

2026 marks our 11th season!  A passion to be outside and work in the soil while contributing positively to the local community and doing meaningful work.

Why seeds? Why BC Eco Seed Co-op?

We were saving seeds for ourselves and so it was a natural fit to add this as part of our cycle. The BSESC provides so much benefit to us in handling all of the sales, logistics, marketing and packaging, that as a small farm we would find extremely hard to do on our own.  A CO-OP is a natural for connecting all of our farms to create a beautiful impact in BC!

What are your core crops? Why?

Flowers!  We are a dedicated specialty cut flower farm and grow more then 300 varieties of perennial and annual flowers to supply our market, bouquet and wedding work.

What has been your greatest challenge and your greatest success as a seed farmer?

Cleaning seed has been our largest challenge, and learning what each kind of seed needs. A big success for us was figuring out rotating our growing over a three year cycle so that we can supply a diversity of blooms without worrying about crops crossing with each other.

What is your favourite farm task?

Cutting flowers :-)

Describe your farm in 50-70 words

We grow specialty cut flowers and provide full service floristry, including special events from late April until early October. We only use what we grow in our floral creations and use sustainable floristry methods. We are proud to offer closed-loop, farm-to-vase, locally grown and made right here (with love!) flowers in our beloved Kootenays .
