Papaver somniferum

Grown as a mainstay of the classic English country flower garden, these annual poppies are hardy and drought-tolerant. Bright scarlet red blooms have a striking black base. The seeds, which contain no active compounds, are great for baking. Easy to grow, the dried seed-heads are perfect for crafts and safe for small pets like hamsters to eat.

Growing instructions

Direct sow outdoors in late fall or early spring. Sow on the surface of the soil in full sun or partial shade. Germination: 20-30 days. Thin to 15cm apart.
