Phaseolus vulgaris
It produces beautiful and delicious long, stringless purple beans that turn green when cooked. We have a lot of them blanched in the freezer and they are excellent in winter soups and side dishes. This bean thrives in cool, wet spring soils and is early to mature. Originally from the Kew Royal Botanical Gardens in England, this bean was brought to the U.S. in 2007 by the good folks at Adaptive Seeds in Oregon. This pole bean grows tall and will require a trellis.

Growing instructions:
Direct seed 5cm (2") deep, 5-8cm (2-3") apart as soon as soil is warm, in rows 45cm (18") apart. Thin to 15cm (6") apart. 8-16 days to germination. For dried beans, stop watering when the pods first start to dry. Harvest when all pods are dry, then store in a dry place with good airflow out of direct sunlight to dry completely before shelling.
