Allium ampeloprasum

Melaton leek was bred at UBC Farm. The population came from a dehybridization project that aimed to create a good open pollinated leek out of the Belton hybrid variety. Melaton has been performing in the top 5 best fall/winter leek within the UBC farm variety trials among 30 other leek varieties. Its dark green leaves, upright growing habit, and large shank give it prime quality for market farmers. Don’t miss your opportunity to grow a BC bred variety!

Growing instructions

Start indoors in February/March for summer harvest. Start fall/overwintering varieties in March/May. Germination in 8-16 days. Sow seeds 1cm deep, thin to 1cm apart. Transplant when seedlings reach 20cm tall. Spacing 45cm apart in row and 10-15cm apart. Prefers soil of a neutral pH in full sun.
