Triticum aestivum
Pembina is a hard red spring wheat licensed in 1959 and once widely grown across Western Canada. Bred in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, as a selection from a Thatcher cross, it’s a sturdy, beardless variety with stiff, mid-long heads. Pembina matures relatively early, yields well, and offers fair resistance to rust. It’s especially valued for its excellent baking quality and is still grown on a small scale today, particularly in areas where rust can be a concern.

Growing instructions
For spring wheat: Direct sow in mid to late spring once soil temperatures reach 4-10 degrees or when soil can be "worked". Planting early is recommended to maximize yield.
For winter wheat: Direct sow in late August to late-September. Germinated seeds develop a crown 3-4 leaves before going dormant over winter. The exact planting window depends on your specific region to balance root growth with the risk of freezing damage before winter.
Wheat can be sown 2cm deep in full sun to partial shade.
