Purple Breeding Mix

Brassica rapa var. chinensis

This breeding project originated from Ferme Coopérative Tourne-Sol in Quebec. Tokyo Bekana is an early, non-heading Chinese cabbage that grows fast and stays tender. Traditionally green in colour, Ferme Tourne-Sol has bred and selected for purple variations. During the 2025 growing season, WoodGrain Farm continued selection from this diverse population for purple leaves and stems, and we’re excited to see how much more purple it gets over time. Any plants that stayed green or bolted too early were enjoyed in farm lunches in stir-fries or kim-chi.
