Nothin’ says summer like biting into a slice of watermelon! Sugar Baby is your picnic crowd-pleaser – perfectly round, small to medium fruit with dark green rind and sweet, bright red flesh. Small seeds aren’t too bothersome to eat, yet are still perfect for the much-loved watermelon seed spit-athon. An heirloom variety that has been adapted for short seasons. Excellent yield, fruit average ~5lb on plants that vine but can be tucked in line or wrapped in a container, or trellised vertically. Prefers well-draining fertile soils that warm easily in Spring.

Growing Instructions
Seed ½” deep in flats or direct seed when soil warms. Transplant at about 2 ft spacing (or 4ft rows with 18” spacing). Take care to not overwater seedlings or allow standing water at their base, as they may rot (seeding watermelon in mounds is a technique commonly used to prevent standing water). Harvest when tendrils nearest the fruit become dry and brown, and when the “ground spot” has turned from white to yellow. Or if you’re a watermelon tapper, listen for a hollow sound… this is an acquired skill and almost as much fun as the eating!
